Duat implements a layered card system where every decision compounds through thirteen procedurally generated underworld chambers. The core loop revolves around drafting cards from a pool of over 200 unique abilities, each tied to specific Egyptian deities like Ra, Anubis, Thoth, and Set. Every run begins with a basic 10-card starter deck that must evolve through strategic choices at judgment halls.
The combat system operates on a turn-based energy economy where cards cost varying amounts of divine energy to play. Synergies emerge from combining deity-specific cards: pairing Ra's solar cards with burn effects, or stacking Anubis death cards for late-game power spikes. The artifact system introduces permanent modifiers that fundamentally alter deck archetypes, enabling builds ranging from aggressive rush strategies to defensive control decks.
Permadeath mechanics ensure each failed run teaches new card interactions. The meta-progression system unlocks additional starting relics and card pools, but mastery comes from understanding the 47 enemy types and their behavioral patterns. Boss encounters at chambers 4, 8, and 13 require specific counter-strategies, forcing players to adapt their deck construction based on upcoming threats revealed through prophecy cards.
Align with seven major Egyptian gods, each offering unique card sets and playstyles. Ra provides aggressive solar damage, Anubis controls the battlefield through death manipulation, Thoth offers card draw and knowledge mechanics, while Set brings chaos and randomness. Mix deity cards to create hybrid strategies or commit fully to a single pantheon for powerful synergy bonuses.
Navigate through 13 randomly generated chambers with branching paths offering different risk-reward scenarios. Choose between combat encounters for card rewards, merchant chambers for artifact purchases, healing shrines, or cursed treasure rooms with high-value loot and dangerous consequences. Map knowledge and path planning become critical skills as you optimize routes based on your current deck strength.
Discover 89 unique relics that provide permanent passive effects throughout your run. Artifacts range from simple stat boosts to game-changing mechanics like starting each combat with extra energy, drawing additional cards, or triggering effects when specific card types are played. Strategic artifact selection can enable entirely new deck archetypes impossible with cards alone.
Upgrade cards at sacred forges to enhance their effects: increase damage values, reduce energy costs, or add entirely new secondary effects. Some cards transform into rare variants when upgraded, changing their fundamental function. The removal system lets you trim weak starting cards, refining your deck into a focused engine. Balancing deck size against card quality becomes a crucial strategic decision.
After completing base runs, unlock 15 ascending difficulty tiers that introduce new enemy modifiers, stricter resource constraints, and powerful boss enhancements. Higher ascension levels require mastery of advanced techniques like deck cycling optimization, energy curve management, and predictive enemy AI exploitation. Each ascension tier fundamentally changes viable strategies.
Compete in daily seeded runs where all players face identical chamber layouts and card offerings. Climb global leaderboards by optimizing every decision for maximum score. Daily runs feature special modifiers that rotate weekly, introducing fresh strategic challenges and forcing adaptation to unusual deck-building constraints.
